OUR PROCESS
Contemporary music and sports constantly cross over into each other’s worlds. It’s clear what’s in store when the NFL ad starts blasting at Super Bowl – everyone’s primed for the excitement. The route you’re about to take as a composer when you’re in front of a high octane sports commercial is often clear too. For Mizuno, we were looking at advertising in sports from a different angle and were delighted to hop on board of this project with Jovan Todorovic and the rest of the team at Monopo Tokyo.
At the project’s outset, determining the musical direction meant finding the perfect angle from which the video should be experienced. Searching for music that best prompts the question “why do people do all of this?” took us to the Baroque era, with its fugues, contrapuntal melodies, or more simply put, we arrived at Bach!
With this as a foundation, a composition that playfully demystifies the meaning behind athletes’ performance in the video came into life, becoming an entertaining (and perhaps more absurd?) musical game in this story with an effective big finish – “crazy is what drives us all”.
